Below are answers to the questions we get asked most often about hiring proof load test weights.

About the weights
What are the weights made of?
Our test weights are made of cast iron. The system comprises interlocking 5te and 1te weights that slot together and are positively secured by integrated tabs, requiring no lashing straps or additional securing.
How accurate are the weights?
Our weights are not calibrated weights in the laboratory sense, but they are manufactured and verified to a known mass. They are suitable for proof load testing applications where a precisely known test load is required. Calibrated load cells are available to hire also, just let us know in your request.
What is the maximum test load available?
Using a beam and cradle combination, the system can be configured to produce loads of up to 300Te.
Loads from 1 Te to 30 Te can be configured without a cradle. A small footprint cradle option is available for loads from 0.5 Te to 12.5Te. Higher loads are achievable but it is best to contact us for a tailored solution.
Can the weights be used for UDL / Ground Load Testing as well as lifting?
Yes. As well as being suspended from lifting equipment for crane and winch testing, the weights can be placed directly onto a structure or platform to simulate a UDL. A recent example of this is the proof load testing of a car ferry loading ramp. Find out more on our UDL & ground loading testing page.
What crane types are the weights suitable for testing?
Our weights are suitable for proof load testing a wide range of crane types including mobile cranes, tower cranes, overhead and gantry cranes, vessel and ship cranes, davit cranes, jib cranes, knuckle boom cranes and offshore pedestal cranes. Find out more on our crane testing page.
Are the weights suitable for offshore and marine applications?
Yes. The positive securing provided by the integrated tabs makes our system particularly well suited to offshore and marine environments where traditional lashing straps are less reliable. The weights come with full inspection certification on every hire. Find out more on our offshore and marine page.

About certification and documentation
What documentation comes with the hire?
Every hire includes inspection certificates for the weights. Certified slings, shackles and rigging equipment are available on request and come with their own certification..
Are the weights LOLER compliant?
Our weights are regularly inspected and come with inspection certificates on every hire. They are suitable for use in proof load testing carried out as part of a LOLER thorough examination. The competent person carrying out the examination will be able to confirm that the weights meet the requirements of the applicable standard.
Do you provide a lift plan?
Please contact us to discuss your specific requirements and we will advise on what documentation can be provided as part of the hire.
Do Classification Societies accept your weights for offshore and marine testing?
Our weights have been used for proof load testing in the offshore and marine sectors. Please
discuss the specific Classification Society and standard applicable to your equipment and we will advise accordingly.
About proof load testing
When is proof load testing required?
Proof load testing is required in a number of circumstances including before first use of new lifting
equipment, following substantial modification or repair, and as part of a LOLER thorough examination where
specified by the competent person. Some Classification Societies also mandate proof load testing for
equipment used in the offshore and marine sectors. For a full explanation see our proof load testing guide.
What is the difference between proof load testing and a LOLER thorough examination?
A LOLER thorough examination is a broader assessment of lifting equipment carried out by a competent person. It may or may not include a proof load test depending on the equipment, its condition and the applicable standard. Proof load testing is one method of verification that may be used as part of or alongside a thorough examination.
What test load should I use?
The required proof load is typically specified by the relevant standard, the equipment manufacturer or the competent person carrying out the thorough examination. It is commonly 125% of the safe working load but may vary depending on the applicable standard. If you are unsure, the competent person responsible for the examination should be able to advise.
