Offshore & Marine

Proof load test weights for offshore and marine projects.

The offshore and marine sectors place some of the most demanding requirements on lifting equipment and testing processes that support it.

Equipment operates in harsh environments, is subject to strict certification requirements, and failure carries consequences that go far beyond those of a typical onshore application. Proof load testing with test weights is not just best practice in these sectors – for many it’s a mandatory requirement.

We hire proof load test weights for offshore and marine projects anywhere in the UK and mainland Europe with configurations from 20kg to hundreds of tonnes.

Applications in the offshore and marine sectors

Our test weights are used for proof load testing a wide range of offshore and marine projects, including:

  • Quayside and port cranes
  • Vessel cranes and deck cranes
  • Offshore pedestal cranes
  • Davit systems and rescue boat davits
  • ROV launch and recovery systems (LARS)
  • A-frame structures
  • Subsea lifting frames and spreader beams
  • Winch systems
  • Gangways and accommodation ladders
  • Cargo handling equipment

Classification society requirements

Many classification societies mandate the use of physical test weights – rather than alternative load application methods – for proof load testing of equipment built to certain marine and offshore standards. This requirement exists because test weights provide a precisely known, fully traceable load that can be made mobile, allowing equipment to be tested under conditions that replicate actual in-service use as closely as possible.

If your equipment is subject to classification society survey or certification, it is important to confirm the applicable standard and testing requirements before planning your proof load test. We can advise on weight configurations to suit your requirements – contact us to discuss your application.

Why our system is well suited to offshore and marine environments

Traditional test weights create particular challenges in offshore and marine environments. Vessels move, decks are wet, space is often restricted and the consequences of a weight assembly becoming unsecured are severe. Cargo lashing straps – commonly used to secure traditional block weights – offer little genuine restraint in these conditions.

Our positive interlocking design weight system addresses these challenges directly:

Positive securing without lashing. The 1Te weights slot inside the recessed 5Te weight and are secured by positive interlocking design. The 5Te weights lock onto a cradle or lower weight by positive locks in each corner, even when fully loaded. There is no reliance on lashing straps at any point in the assembly.

Integral lift points rated to 30Te. Each weight has dedicated integral lift points. The combined lift points on a 5Te weight are rated to 30Te, allowing a stack of three full 9Te assemblies to be lifted together safely without the need for a cradle.

Precise load and centre of gravity control. The 1Te weights can be positioned in three locations within the 5Te weight to maintain balance when an odd number is used. This gives precise control over the load and centre of gravity – important when working on vessels or in environments where stability matters.

Full inspection certification. Every hire includes inspection certificates for the weights, providing the documentation trail that offshore and marine clients require.
