UDL / Ground Loading

Proof load test weights for compression and load testing of structures, decks and platforms.

UDL / Ground loading testing uses test weights placed directly onto a structure, platform, deck or the ground to simulate operational loads.

We hire proof load test weights for UDL / ground load testing anywhere with configurations from 20kg to hundreds of tonnes. Our interlocking test weight system is well suited to UDL applications – the weights stack securely without lashing, are easy to configure to a precise load and come with full inspection certification every hire.

How UDL / ground load testing works

Where crane and lifting equipment testing involves suspending the test weight(s) from the equipment under test, UDL testing works in reverse. The weights are positioned on top of the area, structure or component being tested, applying a downward load that replicates the in -service conditions as closely as possible.

The test load is typically a percentage above the design load – and is held for a defined period while the structure or ground is inspected for signs of deflection, distortion or stress. Once the test is completed and the structure / ground has been confirmed satisfactory, the weights are removed and the results are documented.

The ability to configure the weights precisely and distribute them across a structure makes test weights particularly well suited to UDL applications. Unlike hydraulic jacks or water bags, test weights can be spread across a large surface area to simulate a uniformly distributed load rather than a single point load – which is often a much more accurate representation of real in-service conditions.

Applications

UDL testing with proof load test weights is used cross a wide range of applications but not limited to:

  • Vehicle and cargo ramp testing on ferries
  • Deck load testing on ships and offshore platforms
  • Mezzanine floor load testing in industrial and warehouse environments
  • Bridge and walkway load verification
  • Structural components and fabrications before commissioning
  • Temporary structures and access platforms
  • Quayside and port infrastructure testing

Example 675Te UDL Configuration

Footprint 13300mm x 5350mm x 2050mm

Comprising of:
75 x 5Te test weights
300 x 1Te test weights

Stack height can be increased to reduce footprint as necessary.

Our stacking weight system can be configured to suit the UDL / ground loading of a wide range of areas.

Car ferry ramp – a real application

A recent example of UDL test carried out using our interlocking test weight system involved the proof load testing of a car ferry loading ramp. The ramp needed to be verified as capable of safely carrying the vehicle load it would be subjected to in service before the vessel returned to operation.

Our weights were delivered to the vessel, positioned across the ramp surface to simulate a distributed vehicle load and the ramp was operated. The interlocking test weights made the process straightforward – the weights were stacked on the ramp surface without any need for lashing or additional securing and the configuration could easily be adjusted precisely to achieve the required load test distribution.

The image shows the weights positioned on the ferry ramp during the test – a clear illustration of how the system works in a real marine UDL testing application.
